The Importance of Collaboration

Updated: Aug 22, 2021

No one sensory system works in isolation. The sensory systems of our bodies communicate in order to accomplish a specific function. When the systems collaborate effectively, the outcome is favorable. When communication is lost or interrupted, the outcome can be less than favorable.

Treatment should be viewed in similar fashion. In order to obtain the best results, collaboration is essential. Developmental delays rarely occur in isolation. Here is an article that supports the importance of collaboration with an emphasis on the overlap between occupational therapy and developmental optometry. This article also shares the difference between an optometrist and ophthalmologist and how the philosophies of developmental optometry and occupational therapy overlap significantly.

Collaboration is not only fun, but essential. Each professional approaches the same goal from a slightly different treatment angle and when there is a free flow of collaborative information and ideas, everyone wins.
